BOTANY

The Department was established in 1959, and offers Botany as an Honours subject in the Bachelors Degree with 32 Seats. The allotment is made by the Government of Odisha through Student Academic Management System (SAMS).

Botany as an academic discipline focuses on plants, their structures, properties, and the processes of all forms of plant life. Studies in Botany provide possible solutions to agricultural, horticulture and environmental problems. A Botanist is not only interested in studying the smallest and the most incomprehensible of plants, but the study also includes trees and forests.

The roots of the subject can be traced back to the ancient Greco-Roman times. It is believed that Aristotle and his student Theophrastus in the 4th Century BC worked out descriptions and principles of plant types and functions that have remained the prototype for botanical observation even today. Today, the subject has widened enough to include applied sub-disciplines such as Biotechnology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Environmental Management and many others.

The main programme of study is under BSc (Honours) Botany which is a three-year course. Science students, who have studied Biology or Biotechnology as one of the subjects at the senior secondary level, are eligible for admission to this course. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Botany, one can study for another two years to earn a postgraduate degree in it or pursue applied sciences such as Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, and Toxicology.

While most Botany graduates wish to seek work after graduating, students who want to study further will increase not only their knowledge but chances of employment. After finishing studies, one can go for a teaching job, take up research work in a university or institutes such as The Energy and Resources Institute or join a pharmaceutical company.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

The Computer Science as an Honours subject is offered as a Self-financing Course, and the admission into the course is done by the Government of Odisha through Student Admission Management System (SAMS).

Computer Science has been a very attractive career option for more than two decades now. Students have always been on a look out for a course in computers; be it a full-fledged degree in the subject or a short-term course. The course covers all aspects of computers right from the basic fundamentals of computers to database systems & programming like C++, Java and advance courses like AI, Cloud Computing etc. The best thing about this course is that it mainly focuses on the mathematical and theoretical foundations of computing rather than specific technologies, which quickly become outdated. This way the course prepares anyone for higher education.

However, enhancing skills is a must. Career options available for a student who has completed his graduation in the field of computer science are quite ample these days. One can say this mainly because of the fast growth of IT in our country. Numerous organizations hire B. Sc (CS) students for the post of software testers, software developers etc. in their IT departments.
